It looks like Ben Heck is at it again with yet another brilliant custom xbox 360.. We have reported previously on Ben's projects and thought our members and guests would find this as interesting as we all do here on 360-HQ.
Here's the latest info and images from his project page which also includes a cool video.
My latest project is an Xbox 360 stuffed inside of a Pelican 1490 case. The intention here to create a "tough" portable Xbox 360 that can be transported with ease.
This unit includes:
17″ widescreen LCD monitor.
Built-in speakers.
Power cable compartment.
Reworked top-loading DVD drive.
Removable hard drive.
Ethernet and USB ports.
This unit was built because I’ve had a lot of requests for game consoles that could be used overseas by our servicemen and women and I thought it’d be interesting to take a crack at the concept. It was not built on consignment, a rarity for me these days, so it is up for grabs. I’m also interested the larger-scale possibilities of this kind of project if anyone has any ideas/money.

"EncodeHD" is a application written by Dan Cunningham which will re-encode all types of video files for use on your Xbox 360, home media player or other on-the-go device. EncodeHD replaces the older application named "Encode360".
EncodeHD is still in an early beta stage and as such, may not work exactly as expected
So firstly, let’s talk EncodeHD. Look at the current beta release (0.71) as a ‘technology preview’ of sorts. The idea here is to verify that we’ve got the primary encoding mechanisms up to scratch. So what I’m looking for here is to make sure that video converts for all devices as expected and that the quality is good (or great).
The key things to note for EncodeHD are:
Outputted video is MPEG4 and H.264 with AAC (or AC3) audio, NOT WMV (this is not strictly for X-Box 360 anymore)
This means that 5.1 audio for the X-Box 360 is not yet supported in these formats
Subtitles are also not yet possible, although I’m looking into it
As of now, there’s still a lot of unimplemented functionality that will be added later. If you want to see something in particular, please let me know. However, if it’s going to cludge up the interface and start making things complex, I may not implement requests. We’ll have to see.
One of the nice things about EncodeHD is that it has built-in bug reporting. If you hit a problem, it will ask you if you want to submit a bug report - including all the details I need to help solve the issue. If however, the problem is with video output, it may not detect any problems. In this case, could I ask you to email my bug-tracking system: cases@dcunningham.fogbugz.com, and attach the EncodeHD.Log file which you can find in your Temp folder (Click Start > Run and type %TEMP% to access it).
A member named legueux from gx-mod.com forums has recently released detailed information and now a video to show how he has managed to unban his Xbox 360 Console on Xbox LIVE.
It's not like everyone is going to be able unban their consoles just yet because you need the Xbox 360 CPU key (which can be found using the Hypervisor Exploit or Timing Attack to downgrade first). Many additional tools are also be needed to read the XBOX 360 NAND before you can flash the console with the new information and unban it.
Here are the full list of steps took to unban a Xbox 360 on Xbox LIVE:
Downgrade banned 5787 PAL to 4532 NTSC U, updated again to 5787 via HD. Still banned.
Downgrade banned 5787 PAL to 1888 PAL, updated again to 5787 via HD. Still banned.
Patched original 1888 PAL dump with the last number of the Xbox 360 serial in the keyvault (location A0 to AB) changed. Still banned.
Patched original 1888 PAL dump with the all the numbers of the Xbox 360 serial in the keyvault changed. Still banned.
Replaced the full keyvault in his original 1888 PAL dump of the banned console with a keyvault of an unbanned console. Connected to LIVE OK, updated to latest kernel online OK, still connects fine to LIVE.
The video linked below shows a banned console and how it'll has been unban and will re-connect to xbox LIVE again after he has flashed the console with the 1888 dump with patched keyvault of an unbanned console.
A new .CON file signature homebrew application named "ConSign" has been released for the Xbox 360. It is useful for activities such as porting saved game content from PC to Xbox.
What is it?
The CON file tool updates signatures found in Xbox 360 user content files ("CON" file). CON is the format used for saved games and settings. The tool requires a valid keyvault file to work.
How it works:
In the keyvault of every Xbox 360 is a unique CON keypair that is used for signing CON files. The public key component of this keypair is signed by Microsoft to ensure that arbitrary keypairs cannot be used.
A copy of the public key and its signature is stored in each CON file. This allows Xbox 360 consoles to verify CON files that may be signed by other Xbox 360 consoles.Because the signing keys are per-box, individual consoles can have their keypair revoked in firmware updates.
For more information, see the source code included in the archive.
What can it do?
The tool is not very interesting from the perspective of running unsigned code or Linux. It would require an exploit that is unlikely given the architecture of the Xbox 360.It is useful for activities such as porting saved game content from PC to Xbox.
Ever wanted to double kick like Lars from Metallica?? Well, now you can with a new tutorial called "How To Make Dual Bass Drum Pedals Work in ROCK BAND"..
We have seen a lot of Rock Band hacks and mods, and this is no different. If you want to beat your friend's high score, this little electronics project should help. This is a really clever way of getting around mono plug that is supplied with the pedal.
The game ROCK BAND has a drum set complete with a Bass drum pedal. Because there is only so fast you can work the pedal with your foot, if you want real speed you need TWO pedals - one for each foot.
In an interview with OXM.com Epic president Mark Rein said that the best mods for Unreal Tournament 3 will be for the xbox 360, sorry PS3 fans.
OXM.com then went on to add "Rein confirmed that Epic is talking with Microsoft about getting round the company's reluctance to share user-generated content, and is "cautiously optimistic" that a solution is coming.
He did say that it was unlikely that "user exchanged mods" would be included in the game because it's so close to release, but Epic hope to have a solution at a later date.
This suggests the possibility of Epic trading in mods as down loadable content - effectively publishing the best user-created content over Xbox Live. If that happens, it could be a way for moders to get paid for their work.
I remember back in the day when you had to download your mods from the net and fans made it just because they were fans.
A new RROD (red ring of death) repair kit is now available from teamxecuter to fix your xbox 360.
After a LOT more testing to ensure the optimum materials used in the 360 RROD Repair Kit we are now ready to start making the kits up and to start shipping.
There will be 2 kits available:
1 Xbox 360 Bulk Kit: Includes Repair Materials for 1 Xbox 360, 1 x T10 Screwdriver & 1 x T8 Screwdriver)
10 Xbox 360's Kit: Includes Repair Materials for 10 Xbox 360's (This kit is assumed for repair "professionals" who would already have tools in hand)
All machines tested so far are still working however it is impossible to say how long the fix can work for due to the fact we'd never get it to market if we had to test for a year But the fix is pretty solid and our testers are very happy (and surprised) by the results of such a simple fix.
The cost is very cheap and we will be notifying all resellers of the confirmed RRP when they receive stocks in the next week or so. As you can see we have made this kit affordable to everyone so regardless of how long the fix works for it makes sense for everyone to give it a try !
Our current estimates are:
