Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski chats about his inspirations and innovations with the guys from forbes.com.

A chainsaw revs. The heavily armored Marcus Fenix lumbers forward, ripping through a Locust soldier as if he were shredding turkey with an electric carving knife. The combination assault rifle and mechanized saw blade, known as a Lancer, is one of the most recognizable components of "Gears of War," the Xbox 360 shooter that asks players to save humanity from an alien horde.

The most recognizable man behind the franchise happens to be Cliff Bleszinski. The 33-year-old design director of Epic Games has cultivated a rock star aura, despite the videogame industry's general lack of celebrity. He started out in the business when he was 17. Now he is in charge of one of the largest franchises on Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) console. "Gears of War 2," his latest title, launched in early November and sold 2 million copies its opening weekend. The game is expected to be one of the best-selling games this holiday season.

Bleszinski, who recently unleashed a new pack of multiplayer maps for "Gears 2" over Xbox Live, talked to Forbes.com about the impact downloadable content has on games, making hardcore shooters appeal to casual audiences and his love for "Super Mario Brothers."

 New Fallout 3 DLC Missions
New Fallout 3 DLC Missions
Published by: dartht33bagger on Friday, December 12, 2008
Tagged: Gaming, Live Marketplace, Xbox 360,

Expect this to be rectified in the game's first DLC pack: "Operation Anchorage," which Bethesda recently announced. The five hour, 800-point campaign is a simulation of what producer Jeff Gardiner calls the "famous liberation of Anchorage from Fallout lore." That's right, virtually simulated red Chinese: Your days are numbered.

In the stealth/action focused mission, you'll fight your way into a Chinese base with new tools and perks at your disposal that will be exclusive to the DLC. IGN's got a lot more info, including Bethesda's plan is to increase the level cap with the third piece of DLC, Broken Steel. The wait for next year just got a little longer for those looking to level up their character in Fallout 3.

Who would have seen it coming. Halo 3 is the most played game on XBL for the week of November 24th.

This could be due to a number of reasons. Broken Matchmaking for Gears 2, COD players are now split between two games or the drop in price of the Legendary Map pack for Halo 3.
Whatever the reason Master Chief has taken back the top spot.

 Bethesda to release developer tools
Bethesda to release developer tools
Published by: game_mattster on Tuesday, December 02, 2008
Tagged: Gaming, Xbox 360,

It appears Bethesda is taking the right steps to embrace the modding community, with recent announcements that the company plans to release developer tools before the end of the year. The official Fallout 3 Creation Kit is supposed to be released next month, completely for free for the Xbox 360. Calling it, aptly enough, the G.E.C.K., Bethesda claims they hope people will create their own add-ons. If the response to the construction kit for Morrowind is any indication of how this will fare, we can expect a tidal wave of user-generated content as time goes on.

Bethesda plans to release additional content for the game as well, in the form of three “content packs,” which will be downloadable add-ons for the game. These are not due until after “G.E.C.K.”, with one pack schedule for released every month for the first three months of next year.

 Australia's 18+ Rating A No Go
Australia's 18+ Rating A No Go
Published by: wes213 on Friday, October 31, 2008
Tagged: Gaming, Live Marketplace, Xbox 360,

First of all let me start with how sorry i am for the Australian gamers for this bad news, it wold seem the Australian parliament has a real hate for games that don't look and play like Nintendo made it so they have yet again dropped the idea of adding an 18+ rating.

EDGE-online reports: Australia will remain the only developed nation not to use an 18+ rating for games after a planned public consultation on the matter was shelved this week.

The introduction of an R18+ content classification for videogames in Australia has been in the planning stages for several months. In March, the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General had called for a discussion paper and public consultation on the matter. And while the initiative’s strongest objector, South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson, expressed his concerns with lifting the nation’s MA15+ rating, he had agreed in principal to debate the subject.

However it has emerged that Mr Atkinson has rejected plans to publish the results of the consultation, effectively ending the discussion process. MA15+ is now likely to remain Australia’s highest content classification bracket for videogames for some time. These restrictions mean that many adult-orientated games landing in Australia need to be toned down in order to be granted access into stores and supermarkets.

Recent titles such as GTAIV and Dark Sector have had to censor some of their content to be granted an MA15+ rating and find the shop shelves, whereas titles such as Fallout 3 have been entirely banned.

Mr Atkinson’s opinion on the matter is largely an isolated one. Most Australian Attorney-Generals, members of parliament and Senate members are in complete support of a new game rating. Yet the legislative process which could amend Australia's content classification system can only work with unanimous vote from all state and territory attorney-generals. Mr. Atkinson is therefore allowed to veto such an Act until his time as Attorney-General is over.
There is a building discontent within Australian parliament on the matter. Many politicians are simply embarrassed that they still need to be debating the issue. Hansard from the recent Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs shows a typical dispute in the upper echelons of Australian parliament, with deputy chair Senator Guy Barnett debating the issue with Assistant Secretary from the Classification Policy Branch Amanda Davies:

Senator Barnett: Some of us are dumbfounded as to why we do not have an R rating for video games. Can you share any argument as to why we do not?
Ms Davies: In order to make any changes to the classification code and guidelines, including introducing a new classification, you need to have unanimous agreement from all state and territory ministers and the Commonwealth minister. To date, that has not been obtained.
Senator Barnett: We have got a real problem here, haven’t we, because South Australia is opposing the position.
Ms Davies: The South Australian Attorney is on record on a number of occasions as opposing the introduction of an R18+ classification.
Senator Barnett: We have a real problem, and this is something the Senate and the parliament is going to have to address. If we have one state opposing this, South Australia, then clearly we are not going to have any R rating of video games. That simply cannot occur as a matter of course legally.

Fallout 3 Falls Short On The PS3
Fallout 3 Falls Short On The PS3
Published by: wes213 on Wednesday, October 29, 2008

It may not come as a shock to the fans of this site since we all come here for a love of the XBOX but in most games the line between the 360 and the PS3 is thin and hard to notice when it comes to game visuals but this is not the case with Fall Out 3 according to GameSpot.com.

Fallout 3 Screenshot 4002

For the full game review check the news source link at the bottem of the post but the part being disscussed here reads as follows: It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. Although the Xbox 360 and PC versions display the occasional visual oddity and bland texture, these nitpicks are easy to overlook. Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren't so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around. This version doesn't even offer trophies, whereas the Xbox 360 and PC versions offer Xbox Live/Windows Live achievements.

While this is in no way PS3s problem but a game developer thing it did show that the devs know to put more time in to the console with better fans. LOL

 India Cancelled Fallout 3
India Cancelled Fallout 3
Published by: wes213 on Wednesday, October 22, 2008
Tagged: Xbox 360,

It seems like a lot of the new games out are crossing the line and stepping on the toes of other cultures allot these days starting with Little Big Planet and its use of the Karin in a song and now Fall Out 3 for what ever reason but here is the report to give you a little better idea of whats going on.

Fallout 3 Screenshot 4340

GamingIndians reports: Microsoft India has announced that it has cancelled its plans to release Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360 in India, which was earlier set to release in the country on October 28. A press statement issued by Microsoft states that the game included certain content that could potentially hurt Indian sensibilities.

Due to distribution issues in the region, Microsoft had taken up the role of distributor for Fallout 3 in India, while the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game were never scheduled for release in the country.

Here’s the statement from Microsoft India:

Microsoft constantly endeavors to bring the best games to Indian consumers in sync with their international release. However, in light of cultural sensitivities in India, we have made the business decision to not bring Fallout 3 into the country.

Games fail to release in India for various reasons - high prices, lack of distribution - but “cultural sensitivities” is a first, it would seem. With games like Postal, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto and many more on stores shelves for anyone to purchase, it really makes you wonder what exactly it is that made the release Fallout 3 in India such a business risk.
