The original game "Gears of War" was one of the best games of 2007, winning numerous awards and bringing break through gameplay to many gamers. Now, 2 years later how does the sequel square up to the original, and how can one improve on near perfection?.
Overview
Monkey dogs. From the very start of the game everything seems to be expanded on, from chainsaw duels, new creatures, new weapons, tweaking of strength of the weapons. New vehicles everything has been overhauled and feels like a lot of thought time and love has gone into creating one of the most impressive sequels ive ever played (sides from resident evil 2!)
Gameplay - 10/10
I give the gameplay a perfect 10. At first I thought that the lancer had become too powerful, the shot gun too weak. But as the game progress I can see why. It all adds to the intensity and realism of the game. Picking where to take cover makes a big difference, and being in the right place can make all the difference to the outcome of a fight. the ai is awesome with different outcomes depending on your different tactics. The amount of new baddies to go up against is really enjoyable, the tickers replace the exploding wretches, which can make some intense battles when ur fighting the locusts, and all of a sudden a ticker pops up. I was disappointed that there weren't as many wretches in the game. Some of the weapons i didn't think were that good like the "trigun", and the "hammer of dawn" makes only one appearance at the end of the game which is a little disappointing.
Most of the controls like the original are contextual, a is rodeo run, a is cover, a is pick up a locust, y is execute (which confused me for a while!) the game modes expand on the game with a horde mode where you have to survive wave after wave of locust which is playable by up to 5 players (2 offline - 5 online), co-op is very enjoyable again and the option to pick your own difficulty is a surprising and welcome innovation. Having not played much online I can't comment on the gameplay, but have heard many reports of lots of lag!
There wasn't any "Kryll" and i did enjoy that element of the first, but there are a lot of big bosses and bad guys which the first really lacked.
The fact you can play multiplayer with bots really surprised me as not enough games accommodate bots these days!
Graphics - 9/10
The graphics aren't as crisp as the original but the cut scenes fit in a lot better, nearly all the bad guys have had an overhaul and look amazing, the variety in environments help mix it up and it seems that nearly every problem in the first game has been addressed, and I'm talking about the repeativeness of GOW 1 gameplay.
Sound - 8/10
The first game had an amazing soundtrack which to me really stood out, the sound is very good and all the familiar noises are there but to me personally the score doesn't seem as refined as the first.
Overall - 9/10
If you liked "Gears 1", im sure youll love "Gears 2", if u haven't played the first I would recommend playing it before you play this other wise it may annoy you that its quite different. Then ending leaves it blatantly open for a 3rd, which is why i knock gow 2 down to 9. Asides from that its a very excellent game and very enjoyable, now I've got to go, and finish the game on insane!!!!!
