Dead Rising, one of my new favorite games. For those of you who don't know what Dead Rising is, here is a run down. You are Frank West a journalist who has been tipped off there is something going on in this town, so you take a helicopter in because the army has already surrounded the town.
You begin your journey on the top of the rooftop after the helicopter ride, and you have 72 hours to find out what is going on, why it is going on, and how, when the 72 hours are up your ride comes. As you should have guessed by the cover art or the name this game involves zombies, and lots of them. Now that we got the story out of the way here’s the game play. You must use everything and anything as a weapon (being trapped in an American mega mall there is obviously a lot) from lawn mowers to motorcycles, from benches to bowling balls, capcom has done a lovely job of implementing weapons. Though using them may seem like a simple button masher, but you must learn to decide whether to use your physical abilities or weapons that can break over time. This adds for some strategy.
There are escort missions where you must escort trapped people who aren't infected to the security room, this is a great idea but still bugged. They made it so they can use weapons or eat/drink food you give them. It would be a good addition it’s just the AI for survivors is HORRID. They get stuck on walls and get lost way too easy (when the in game tracker points you through obstacles quite well) and they don't listen to you completely. You can call them but they will most likely be fighting zombies with the weapon you gave them. Games play wise the zombie killing is great fun, but the escorting is a small letdown from the game. Now graphics, something that too many people base games off of. This game has amazing graphics, the animation on all the models is stunning I felt very engaged to the characters from their movements. The whole world is textured very nice and models have a really decent number poly count. There are only two minor problems I had with the graphics, one at the courtyard where you load a new area zombies will pop in (only in one spot though) and the antistrobic filtering, its good but it still could have used work (how well textures look in the distance) Now for sound, probably some of the most realistic sounding zombies and weapons, main character voices are good while survivors are generic and repeat themselves. Finally Replay value, this is one of those games that you can beat the two main modes in about 8 - 10 hours but there are so many side missions and escorting to be done that it will want you to play again. There are 50 achievements for this game and id say they are a great mix of easy, medium, hard, and insane to get. If you’re an achievement whore this will definitely keep you busy
Overall if you’re a fan of zombies or just want a good storied game with fun action elements I would recommend this game
